With a roster that includes seven players from Western New York, Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, has taken over the No. 1 position in the two major NCAA Division II men’s lacrosse rankings after Saturday’s win over the previous No. 1 team, Limestone College of Gaffney, S.C.
Lake Erie (5-0) defeated Limestone on the road, 14-12 as Lucas Shafer (Hamburg) led the attack with four goals and two assists. Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg) had three goals and two assists while Austin Bishop (Hamburg) had a pair of goals and an assist.
Other Storm players from WNY are backup goalkeeper Tom Lipomi (Hamburg), midfielders Brandon Donohue (Bishop Timon-St. Jude) and Connor Ryan (Hamburg) and defense Alexander Corbett (Orchard Park), Zach Bruening (Lancaster) and Kole Robinson (Orchard Park). Lucas Shafer leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and six assists for 17 points. Bishop 11-4-15 and Mitchell Shafer 3-8-11 are among the team points leaders.
Four of Lake Erie’s five victories have come on the road including a 7-6 victory at LeMoyne in Syracuse when the Dolphins were ranked No. 2 in the nation.
It’s the first time Lake Erie has been ranked first in the country.
