Ladder used to rescue three from Cheektowaga house fire

A ladder was used to rescue three people from a second-floor porch at a Cheektowaga home, where flames broke out in the basement early Monday morning.

Nobody was injured in the fire at 30 Reo Ave., although one resident – a pregnant woman – was taken to a local hospital for an evaluation. “She’s doing fine,” said Chief Richard Siejak of Rescue Volunteer Hose Company No. 1.

The fire was reported at 3:51 a.m. Occupants of the first floor of the 2½-story frame home made it out on their own, Siejak said.

The cause of the fire, which originated in the basement, remains under investigation, the chief said. Damage was estimated at about $40,000 – primarily to two basement rooms that were gutted.

The Red Cross was called to assist seven people affected by the fire.
