LAKEWOOD – Six teenagers were arrested after a fight in the stands at a basketball tournament escalated Saturday night at the Lakewood YMCA on East Fairmount Street.
Officer Matthew Lundsten of the Lakewood-Busti Police said a 17-year-old boy from Dunkirk and five juveniles, four from Dunkirk and one from Buffalo, were charged with resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.
The fight started during the final game of an annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Lundsten said that before he arrived about 7:45 p.m., YMCA workers had detained one of the combatants. Lundsten said when he arrested that boy and placed him in his patrol car, the crowd of about 60 outside the YMCA “exploded. It was like a small riot.”
He said the crowd was smashing vending machines and damaging other property before the fracas was quelled in about five minutes by nine officers from the Lakewood-Busti and Ellicott police departments, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and the State Police.
Three of those arrested were girls and three were boys, Lundsten said. “All of them admitted to smoking weed,” he added.
