LOCKPORT – Over the weekend students and staff at Lockport Senior High School began learning more about the death of their classmate, Michael J. Dmochowski, 18, a senior and star swimmer who was killed in a head on crash as he returned from visit to Ithaca College Friday night.
On Monday students and sports teams showed their support by wearing team jerseys and school T-shirts and sweatshirts.
“The (entire) Lockport community really comes together in these types of situations,” Dmochowski’s neighbor and guidance counselor, Krista Isherwood, said Sunday.
In addition to the swim team, Michael was a member of the National Honor Society, the National Mathematics Honor Society and had received the Sportsmanship Award and the Academic All-American award. He was also a water safety coordinator and swim instructor for the YMCA at the high school. He also worked part-time at Lake Effect Ice Cream.
According to State Police at Owego, Michael’s car, a 2012 Chevy Camaro had been traveling southbound when it drifted into the northbound lane and into oncoming traffic at 9:42 p.m. Friday on State Route 96/34, near Fisher Settlement in Spencer, NY.
His car collided head on with a 2013 F-150 pickup driven by Gary H. Holmes, 40, of Spencer.
Michael was pronounced dead at the scene by Tioga County Coroner, Stu Bennet. A coroner’s report on Saturday determined the cause of death was severe trauma. Alcohol and drugs were not factors.
Holmes was taken to Robert Packer Hospital with foot and ankle injuries.
Police were still investigating a cause on Sunday.
The teen is survived by his parents, Thomas and Michelle; an older brother, Stephen; two younger sisters, Kathryn and Lauren; and paternal grandparents, Stephan and Theresa Dmochowski.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. John the Baptist Church, 168 Chestnut St.
