Griffs team up to blank Iona

Four Canisius College pitchers teamed up to shut out Iona on eight hits over 16 innings in an 8-0, 7-0 doubleheader sweep of the Gaels to open their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule in New Rochelle on Sunday. Devon Stewart and Josh Shepley combined on a four-hitter in the opener. Stewart struck out five and walked only two over eight innings. Shepley pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. J.P. Stevenson and Zachary Sloan blanked the Gaels on four hits in the secone game with Stevenson striking out six and walking just one in six innings. Sloan set down the side in order to close it out in the seventh.

Brett Siddall hit his fourth homer of the season in the opener. Jesse Puscheck, a preseason All-American selection at third base, and shortstop Anthony Massicci had three hits each in the doubleheader. Two of Puscheck’s hits were doubles. Canisius (9-13, 2-0 MAAC) will face Iona again Monday at noon.

The University at Buffalo picked up its first win in three Mid-American Conference starts with a 5-1 triumph over Northern Illinois. The three-game weekend series was played in Westfield, Ind., due to unplayable field conditions in Amherst. Winning pitcher Mike McGee struck out nine and allowed one hit and one run in five innings. Ben Vey had three hits while Nick Sinay and Bobby Sheppard had two hits each for the Bulls.
