Two Clarence men arrested for stealing from UB students’ cars

Two Clarence men were arrested by Amherst police late Thursday on charges of stealing a large amount of property from unlocked cars belonging to University at Buffalo students who live in an off-campus housing complex on Nickel Way.

Matthew Bader and Nicholas Matalonis, both 19, were stopped as they tried to speed off as Amherst police arrived at the parking lot about five minutes before midnight. A large amount of stolen property and marijuana was found in the suspects’ vehicle.

Bader was charged with speeding and other traffic infractions and criminal possession of stolen property. Matalonis was charged with criminal possession of stolen property. Police responded to a 911 call about a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot.

Residents of the housing complex are urged to check their vehicles and report any larcenies to the Amherst Police Department at 689-1311. Police also suggested the college students make an effort to lock their cars in the parking lot.
