Slow start for Bulls: West Virginia jumped out to a 7-0 lead. UB didn't score until Lamonte Bearden made a couple free throws 3:13 into the game. Shannon Evans hit a three-pointer about 40 seconds later for UB's first field goal.
But then ... UB started to handle West Virginia's swarming press, cleaned up sloppy turnovers, made a few wide-open shots and switched to a zone defense to slash the lead to three points with 4:25 left.
Big problems: The Bulls are shooting only 39.1 percent from the floor, 50 percent from the foul line and have committed 12 turnovers. WVU is shooting 46.2 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the line with eight turnovers.
Moss checkup: MAC player of the year Justin Moss, still recovering from his sprained right ankle, was scoreless for nearly the first 10 minutes before he finally hit a jump shot. He has six points and a game-high five rebounds.
Halftime leaders: Sophomore guard Shannon Evans has seven points for UB. Bearden has three assists. Juwan Staten leads WVU with 10 points and three assists.
All-WNY matchup: UB senior forward Will Regan (Nichols) and West Virginia junior guard Jaysean Paige (Jamestown) have been involved a little. Paige made his only field-goal attempt, a three-pointer, and has one rebound and one steal. Regan has one offensive rebound and one assist.
