Girls Class D semifinal: Panama vs. Heuvelton

How they got here: Panama reached its first final four by beating Section V champion Prattsburgh, 50-45, last Saturday. Heuvelton advanced to first state final four by beating Section III champion Oriskany, 52-39.

Panama starters/key reserves: 5-8 senior Brittany Lenart, 5-7 junior Emilee Sperry, 5-6 junior Taylor Bowen, 5-5 eighth-grader Madalyn Bowen, 5-10 seventh-grader Natalie Angeletti, 5-7 junioe Amelia Manwaring, 5-3 junior Madison Smith, 5-5 junior Natalie Torres.

Heuvelton key players: 5-11 sophomore Paige McCormick, 5-11 senior Olivia St. Pierre, 6-0 Kylie Piercy, 5-6 junior Natalie Barr, 5-6 junior Karina Warren.

Skinny on Heuvelton: Heuvelton is in St. Lawrence County, about 6 miles southeast of Ogdensburg. The tiny village in the North Country has a population of around 700.

Scouting report: Small town, lots of height is the story with the Bulldogs. They want to utilize their athleticism and length and also want to force Panama’s solid outside shooters beyond their comfort range.

What’s next: Winner advances to Sunday’s 10 a.m. championship game against either Section II’s Fort Edward or Section IV’s South Cortright. Of the teams in Class D, only South Cortright has won a state title.
