Spring is here and drivers will be seeing more orange cones as roadwork season begins. Four Thruway projects around Buffalo will begin next week:
• The first phase of the $55.3 million replacement of the deck on the southbound North Grand Island Bridge will begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Lane closures will be from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. initially; in April, the entire bridge will be closed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and overnight bridge closures will continue through August. Traffic will be detoured to the northbound bridge, with single lane use in each direction.
• Replacement of the Cleveland Drive Thruway overpass will begin at 9 p.m. Monday. The westbound Cleveland Drive on-ramp to the Thruway will be closed for the duration of the project. Starting April 6, the overpass also will be closed. Work is expected to be completed in November. The project also includes adding a lane on the Thruway from I-290 to Route 33, to alleviate congestion at the “Big Blue Water Tower” during peak periods.
• The Williamsville toll barrier expansion begins on Monday, with the addition of a westbound E-ZPass lane, realignment and restriping of the pavement and relocation of the administrative building. Minimal impact on traffic is expected.
• The Bedell Road overpass rehabilitation on Grand Island begins on Monday and Bedell Road will be closed to all but local traffic from West River Road to Grand Island Boulevard. The road will be closed until the end of June.
