TROY – East Aurora’s second trip to the state girls’ basketball final four won’t be a repeat of its first.The Blue Devils’ season came to an end at the hands of Section IV champion Susquehanna Valley, 53-46, in Class B on Friday morning before an estimated 500 at Hudson Valley Community College.
Emma Brinker led EA with 20 points but the Sabers’ pressure defense sped up the Blue Devils and forced them into too many mistakes – including 25 turnovers.
SV (18-5) will play either Irvington or Hoosick Falls here at 4 p.m. Saturday for the state Class B championship.
EA (22-3) trailed by as much as 10 on a couple occasions in the first half but pulled within 25-22 by halftime as senior Erin Nason had five points during the Blue Devils’ closing 7-0 run over the final 2 minutes, 50 seconds.
East Aurora carried that momentum into the third quarter and took a 26-25 lead on baskets by Sam Youngman and Brinker during the opening 1:25. Courtney Knapp’s trey with 5:12 left in the quarter gave SV the lead for good.
Shayna Lee shot 5 for 10 from the floor and led the Sabers with 16 points.
This was East Aurora's first state semifinal appearance since 2007, when the Blue Devils won the state championship.
