SUNSET BAY – Flood water from Cattaraugus Creek blocking part of Alleghany Road Tuesday evening, preventing traffic from entering Sunset Bay from 5 p.m. to about 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Residents of the bay area were warned to get their vehicles to higher ground and be prepared to leave their homes in the event of a widespread flood.
Hanover Highway Superintendent Steve D’Angelo announced that the road was re-opened at about 9 p.m. He said he consulted with the National Weather Service and it was predicted that water would recede throughout Tuesday night. D’Angelo said that he had a small section of Alleghany Road blocked off with road signs and barricades. He said he thought the area would be passable for school buses on Wednesday morning.
Ice build up in Cattaraugus Creek and large amounts of snow melt and water from farther south were expected to reach the mouth of the creek at Lake Erie sometime within the next 24 hours.
