Red Cross urges preparation by residents facing flood threat

Residents facing the threat of flooding are being urged by the American Red Cross to put together emergency preparedness kits should they need to evacuate their homes.

A flood warning was issued Tuesday morning for the northeastern corner of Chautauqua County, where an ice jam formed near Sunset Bay. The warning is set to expire at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The Red Cross recommends that the emergency kits include:

• At least a three-day supply of water and non-perishable food;

• First aid kit;

• Medications;

• Personal hygiene items;

• Copies of personal documents;

• Cell phone and chargers; and

• Family and emergency contact information.

Even if your property isn’t directly affected by flooding, the Red Cross recommends staying away from flood waters. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep a person off his or her feet, and most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

There is a free Red Cross Flood App from iTunes or Google Play, and additional information is available at
