An independent licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association was the target of a “sophisticated cyberattack,” according to a statement issued Tuesday by health insurer BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York.
The attack attempted “to gain unauthorized access to the member and claims data of Premera,” a separate entity from BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York, located in Washington State and Alaska, the release stated.
“We are currently working with Premera to identify any potential impacts to BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York members who have received services in Premera markets from 2002 through early 2015,” said Julie Snyder, a BlueCross BlueShield spokeswoman.
Members who live and work in Western New York and have not received medical services in Washington State or Alaska are not believed to be affected, she said.
