Akron man pleads guilty in fatal hit-and-run

An Akron man pleaded guilty Monday in Erie County Court to leaving the scene of a fatal crash involving a pedestrian shortly before midnight Jan. 4 in Newstead.

Matthew L. Jurek, 26, admitted that he was driving his pickup truck on Indian Falls Road when he hit Francis A. Meldrum Jr., 38, of Corfu, and that he failed to stop and report the incident.

Judge Michael L. D’Amico set sentencing for April 14. Jurek, who is being held without bail, faces up to seven years in prison.

A driver in the area saw Meldrum on the ground and called 911 at 12:08 a.m. Jan. 5, not long after the victim was struck, according to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.

Jurek, who lives on Main Road, was arrested Jan. 9 after investigators with the sheriff’s office’s Detective Bureau and Crash Investigation Unit impounded his pickup and found evidence linking him to the hit-and-run.
