UB will play West Virginia in first round of NCAA Tournament

The University at Buffalo will play West Virginia on Friday in Columbus, Ohio, in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament.

The Bulls received a No. 12 seed in the Midwest Regional of the 68-team tournament. West Virginia is the No. 5 seed.

The berth in March Madness is the first in the 23-year history of UB at the Division I level. UB earned its spot in the event with an 89-84 victory over Central Michigan in the Mid-American Conference championship game Saturday night in Cleveland.

Both UB and West Virginia are 23-9. West Virginia is ranked No. 18 in the country and finished fifth in the Big 12 Conference.

The No. 12 seed for UB is higher than the MAC champion received in five of the previous six years.
