WILSON -- Two more people have reported being victimized by tax return fraud, sheriff’s deputies said Friday.
A Harbor Street resident told deputies she received a letter from the Internal Revenue Service on Thursday, seeking additional information for her 2014 tax return. She told deputies that she typically files jointly with her husband, and that they had yet to file their 2014 return. She was advised by IRS representatives on how to proceed with the apparent identity theft.
A Ransomville man reported a similar incident on Friday. He reported being told by the IRS that someone had used his personal information to file a tax claim electronically, and was trying to have money deposited directly into an unknown account.
Deputies have reported other similar incidents in recent weeks throughout the county.
