Nearly 15,000 untaxed cigarettes seized in two traffic stops in Pembroke

PEMBROKE – Nearly 15,000 untaxed cigarettes were seized Thursday in the arrest of a Rochester man and two Syracuse men during traffic stops hours apart on Allegany Road in the Town of Pembroke, according to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.

John Anthony Tambe, Jr., 36, of Burrows Street, Rochester was stopped in the 7900 block of Alleghany about 10:40 a.m. and was found to have more than 3,400 untaxed cigarettes in his vehicle. Andrew John Schaff, 50, of East Genesee Street, Syracuse, and Jason Christopher Landers, 39, of Lillian Avenue, Syracuse, were stopped in the 8300 block of Allegany about 1:30 p.m. and were found to jointly be in possession of over 11,000 untaxed cigarettes.

Tambe was charged with the tax law crime of possession of more than 400 untaxed cigarettes, speeding and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Landers, the driver of the Syracuse car, was charged with possession or transporting or offering for sale unstamped cigarettes and Schaff was charged with a felony count of criminal tax fraud in the third-degree, possession and transport of more than 10,000 untaxed cigarettes, failing to keep right on the road and moving between lanes unsafely.

All three were ordered to appear in Pembroke Town Court for proceedings at 5:30 p.m. April 14.
