Tim Kenney, executive associate athletic director at UMass, has been named the new athletic director at St. Bonaventure, the university announced Wednesday.
Kenney, 44, has been at UMass since 2004, first serving as associate athletic director for advancement through 2010. Of note:
* Kenny was an All-American and Academic All-American swimmer while earning his undergraduate degree in sports management and exercise science from UB in 1993. He has a master's in sports administration and physical education from Florida State.
* His wife Maureen grew up in Grand Island.
* Kenney will take over in mid-April the position that's been held by interim athletic director Dr. Ron Zwierlein since shortly after Steve Watson left the AD post in December to take the same job at Loyola Chicago.
Derek Morel, the current director of athletics at the University of New Orleans. was the other finalist for the position.
"We're thrilled to bring someone of Tim's caliber on board," said Bona President Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., in a statement. "The experience he's garnered in so many facets of Division I athletics is invaluable to us."
