How Big 4 men's basketball teams have fared in the NCAA Tournament

UB has earned a bye into Friday's Mid-American Conference semifinals and is gunning for its first NCAA Tournament berth. St. Bonaventure, no stranger to the NCAAs, begins Atlantic 10 Tournament play on Thursday. Here's a look at how the Big 4 teams have fared in their trips to NCAAs:

Lost to Utah, 72-43  ...  Even without ailing All-American Keith Van Horn, Utes overpower John Beilein’s Griffs.


Beat West Virginia, 64-56 ...   Hank Nowak scores 19 and Joe Leone 18 as Griffs oust Mountaineers.
Lost to North Carolina, 87-75 ...  National player of year Lennie Rosenbluth rips off 39; Tar Heels go on to win it all.
Beat Lafayette, 82-76 ...   Griffs triumph in regional consolation; Greg Britz has 25.


Beat N. Carolina St., 79-78  ... (4ot) Fran Corcoran jumper finishes second-ranked Wolfpack in upset for ages.
Beat Dartmouth, 66-58  ... Griffs take the regional title behind Hank Nowak’s 29 points.
Lost to Temple, 60-58  ... Future NBA All-Star Guy Rodgers scores 22 and Owls narrowly deny Griffs a Final Four berth.


Beat Williams, 73-60  ...  Johnny McCarthy’s 19 points power Griffs to first NCAA win.
Beat Villanova, 73-71  ...  Tandem of McCarthy (28 points) and Nowak (27) too much for Wildcats.
Lost to La Salle, 99-64  ... Future HOFer Tom Gola scores 30; Explorers go on to national championship.



Beat Florida A&M, 77-69 ...  Senior Clif Brown erupts for career-high 32 points,including six threes.
Lost to Kansas, 107-67 ...  Top-seeded Jayhawks build 52-27 halftime lead and cruise.


Lost to Oklahoma, 84-67  ... NU holds tough until late as Juan Mendez goes for 22 points, 15 boards.


Beat Penn, 79-69  ... All-American Calvin Murphy scores 35 as 17th-ranked Purple Eagles advance.
Lost to Villanova, 98-73  ... Murphy held to 18 on 8-of-22 shooting; Howard Porter nets 29 for Wildcats.
Lost to N. Carolina St., 108-88  ... Murphy caps career with 35 but Wolfpack have three players with 24 or more.



Lost to Floria State, 66-63  ... Magical postseason run ends despite 20 and seven from Andrew Nicholson (pictured above).


Lost to Kentucky, 85-80 (2ot)  ... Should Bona have fouled Tayshaun Price (28) before tying three forced first OT?


Lost to Penn, 92-83  ... Penn’s Keven McDonald strikes for career-high 37; Greg Sanders 30 for Bona.


Beat Davidson, 85-72  ... Bob Lanier throws down 28, Matt Gantt 19 and Bonnies are thinking national title.
Beat North Carolina State, 80-68  ... Lanier strikes for 24 and fourth-ranked Bona pulls away in the second half.
Beat Villanova, 97-74 ...  Oh no. Lanier suffers season-ending knee injury near end of regional final.
Lost to Jacksonville, 91-83 ...  7-3 Artis Gilmore nets 29 and Dolphins outscore Bonnies, 37-15, at the line.
Lost to New Mexico State, 79-73  ... Greg Gary scores 22 in third-place game but Bonnies can’t shake thoughts of what might have been.


Defeated Boston College, 102-93  ... Bill Butler (34) and Lanier (32) dominate paint during 54-point Bona second half.
Lost to North Carolina, 91-72 ...  23 apiece for Butler and Lanier but Tar Heels’ balance does them in.
Lost to Columbia, 95-75 ...  Future Buffalo Brave Jim McMillan leads Columbia with 19 points.


Defeated Rhode Island, 86-76  ... Fred Crawford lights up Rams for 34 points and 16 boards.
Lost to Wake Forest, 78-73  ... Bonnies fall despite Tom Stith’s 29 points and 12 rebounds.
Defeated Princeton, 85-67  ...  Stith leads way with 29 points and Bona shoots 53 percent from the field.
