Baccas, Loesing, Sharkey receive honors for UB as MAC announces women's hoop awards

University at Buffalo women's basketball players Christa Baccas, Mackenzie Loesing and Kristen Sharkey were among the postseason award winners announced Monday by the Mid-American Conference.

Baccas was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year. Loesing was named Sixth Player of the Year and made third-team all-conference. Sharkey was named to the all-MAC second team. The MAC women's player, coach and freshman of the year will be named on Tuesday.

Baccas, a senior center, led the league with 55 blocks, an average of 2.2 a game. She also made honorable mention all-league. She ranked second in the conference with 3.4 offenseive rebounds a game. She ranks second in UB history in blocks and 13th among active Division I players with 243 for her career. She averaged 8.1 points and points and 7.3 rebounds a game.

Loesing, a junior guard, fought through a season-long ankle injury to average 13.7 points a game. She also hit 40 three pointers, made 44 steals and 34 assists.

Sharkey, a senior forward, led the Bulls with 14.3 points and averaged 8.0 rebounds a game. She made third-team all-MAC last year.

UB plays in the MAC quarterfinals Thursday at noon in Cleveland.
