Old Fort Niagara sets volunteer breakfast, seeks newcomers

YOUNGSTOWN – Old Fort Niagara will honor its corps of volunteers and name its volunteer of the year at a breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday at the fort.

State Sen. Robert G. Ortt, R-North Tonawanda, will present the award at the breakfast.

Volunteers logged 35,011 hours of work at the historic site in 2014. That’s the equivalent of 16 additional staffers working 40-hour weeks, Executive Director Robert Emerson said.

Those interested in volunteering at the fort may pick up an application at the breakfast or online at Reservations for the meal are required by calling 745-7611, extension 221.

New volunteers are being sought to help with the annual Haunted Fortress fund-raiser Oct. 17 and 24. Volunteer jobs range from serving as a guide to working at the admission desk.
