LOCKPORT – Two tenants suffered smoke inhalation in a fire early Wednesday in an Olcott apartment building, according to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire at 5982 Washington St. was reported at about 3:30 a.m. by one of the tenants, who said there was a fire in an adjoining apartment.
Sheriff’s deputies helped volunteer firefighters from Olcott evacuate the building, which contained three apartments. Two tenants were suffering from smoke inhalation, deputies said; further information about their status wasn’t disclosed.
The blaze was quickly extinguished and most of the building was saved, deputies said. Firefighters from Olcott, Miller Hose and Barker responded to the alarm.
It appears the fire started in a basement apartment, but its cause and the amount of damage remains under investigation, deputies said.
The Red Cross is assisting the displaced tenants.
