Alien beings would be wise to stay far away from Earth

I read with bemusement in a March 1 article that some scientists believe that extraterrestrials could be hostile to earthlings. I have the opposite take. Any intelligent extraterrestrial being would be wise to avoid and be afraid of human beings.

All one has to do is look at our history and our current situation. We have oppressed and enslaved our fellow human beings, wiped out other species, trashed our planet, destroyed our environment, committed genocide, come to the brink of nuclear annihilation, etc. What makes so many of us believe that we would somehow get our act together if we discovered intelligent life from other planets? As much as we have exploited each other, why would we not exploit extraterrestrial beings and their natural resources?

The psychologist Steven Pinker believes we human beings are greatly improving morally as a species. But we still have a long way to go. I hope that if there is intelligent life on other planets – for their sake and ours – they stay as far away from us as possible. Even if they start out benign, it will just be a matter of time before we tick them off.
