Both the Daemen men’s and women’s teams moved on to the semifinals with victories on Wednesday in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 tournaments at Penn State-Fayette in Uniontown, Pa.
The men (19-10) rallied in the second half to defeat Indiana-South Bend, 69-63.
Senior Gerald Beverly, the USCAA Player of the Year, led the Bobcats with his 19th double-double of the season (21 points, 19 rebounds). IUSB made 9 of 17 three pointers as it took a 39-31 first half lead and hit 13 of 27 overall. A dunk by Beverly sparked a 12-2 closing run by Daemen.
Coach Mike MacDonald’s team will face No. 4 seed Concordia-Alabama, a 99-93 winner over No. 5 Florida National, in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Thursday.
All five starters for the women’s team scored in double figures in an 82-72 victory over The Apprentice School of Newport News, Va. Senior Shy Britton led the No. 5 seed Bobcats with 20 points and blocked six shots to give her 89 for the season. Junior Raeann Stilwell (St. Mary’s, Lancaster) had 19 points including her 200th three of her career. Sophomore Leah McDonell (Cardinal O’Hara) had 14 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Sara Saba (Lancaster) had 12 points despite playing just 24 minutes due to foul trouble, and Natalie Galus (Frontier) had 10 points.
Daemen will play defending champion Concordia-Alabama in the semifinals Thursday at 11 a.m. Concordia defeated St. Joseph’s of Brooklyn, 83-63, on Wednesday.
