Charles Destro of West Seneca, retired president of a Buffalo-area construction company, died Tuesday after a brief illness – six days after the death of his wife of 57 years, the former Giovanna Licata-Caruso. He was 84.
Mr. Destro and his family immigrated to the United States from Sicily in 1961, settling in Buffalo and becoming citizens.
He became a member of Laborers Local 210 and worked in construction.
In the 1970s, he co-founded Destro & Brothers Construction Co. with brothers Paul and Carmen and brother-in-law Charlie Zagarrio. He retired in 1999.
The company was responsible for developing housing on land off Center Road in West Seneca, known as Villa Destro.
After retirement, Mr. Destro traveled to Australia, Europe and throughout the U.S., spending the winter in Florida.
Last year, he hosted a Caribbean cruise for his daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Christine Croston and LilienGetz; two sisters, Carmela Zagarrio and Giussepina Lauria; and five grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:15 a.m. Saturday in Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 4220 Seneca St., West Seneca.
