Barker man charged with drunken driving, blames his dog for a crash into a snow bank

HARTLAND – A dog caused a car to crash, according to a man found with his car in a snow bank on Hartland Road on Monday.

State Police said the driver, Stephen J. Novak III, 61, of Barker had a dog in the car, but he also was found with a blood alcohol level of 0.15 percent, nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent. Novak’s dog was removed from the vehicle by the Town of Lockport dog warden and taken to the Niagara County SPCA for safekeeping.

Novak was charged with driving while intoxicated, consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle and moving from a lane unsafely. A court date was set for the Town of Hartland for March 17.
