All-SUNYAC Bengals: Several Buffalo State athletes earned All-SUNYAC honors in the winter sports season. Chris Cartwright, who played only the second semester, was a first-team selection in basketball. Fellow senior Roderick Epps made the second team. Senior forward Ashley Wallace (Starpoint), the Bengals’ leading scorer at 13.2 points per game and leading rebounder with 200, made second team all-conference in women’s basketball. In hockey, junior defenseman Ben Kramer was named to the third team for the second season in a row.
Reed gets AMCC honors: Julian Reed, the lone senior on the D’Youville team, was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Year in men’s basketball. Coach Earl Schunk was named Coach of the Year after directing the Spartans to nine more overall wins and seven more conference wins than the season before. D’Youville was 10-16 overall and 8-10 in the conference. … Softball pitcher Katie McHenry (Sweet Home) of D’Youville was named AMCC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. She was conference pitcher of the year in 2014 and a two-time first-team all-AMCC selection.
Mavs off to NCAAs: Medaille’s men’s basketball team (19-7, 14-4 AMCC) will be off to Marietta College in southern Ohio to face the host school (25-3) in an opening round game of the NCAA Division III Tournament at 8 p.m. on Friday. Wooster (21-6) and Misericordia (22-6) will play in the first game at 5 p.m. with the winners playing on Saturday.
Medaille earned its fourth appearance in the tournament and first since 2012 with a come-from-behind overtime victory over Hilbert in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship game last weekend. Medaille is playing its first season under Mike Blaine.
Marietta received an at-large bid to the tournament after losing to Mount Union in the championship game of the Ohio Athletic Conference.
