Stop sign stolen, using hammer and chisel

A 55-year-old Peter Street man was arrested Monday afternoon after police received reports of him using a hammer and chisel to steal a stop sign after taking its pole out of the ground at Chandler and Howell streets about 4:30 p.m.

Jeffrey C. Zon, who allegedly was riding his bicycle at the time of the alleged theft, was arrested on Grant near Amherst streets a short time later. Police reported recovering the stop sign and finding the hammer and chisel in his left jacket pocket. Zon was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, possession of burglar’s tools, criminal mischief and petit larceny.
