Medaille College earned the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament championship with Saturday’s overtime victory over Hilbert and learned Monday it will travel to Marietta (Ohio) to face the 25-3 Pioneers on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Medaille came back from a double-digit deficit to top Hilbert, 81-76, in the AMCC final as Ryan Grandits (Kenmore West) produced a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds. Johnathan Belton added 23 points and Jammal Coleman 19 points and seven boards as the Mavericks improved to 19-7.
Marietta is formidable. The Pioneers have the Ohio Athletic Conference player of the year in 6-foot-7 senior Garrett Stephenson. They were upset by Mount Union in OAC final.
The Medaille-Marietta winner will face the Wooster-Misericordia winner on Saturday.
The NCAA Division III Tournament has a field of 62 teams.
