Canisius hockey wraps up second spot

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Canisius College already had wrapped up its first home quarterfinal Atlantic Hockey playoff game since 2005. Now the Golden Griffins have reached a higher destination.

Canisius wrapped up second place in its conference by defeating the Air Force Academy, 4-1, on Friday night.

The Griffins were in control of this for most of the game, as they never trailed. Tyler Wiseman of Canisius scored the first period’s only goal, and Cody Freeman made it 2-0 in the second period. Air Force cut the lead to 2-1 early in the third, but Freeman and Mitch McCrank wrapped it up with scores from there.

“Keegan Asmundson made three huge saves in the first period until we got our legs,” coach Dave Smith of the Griffins said. “I thought we played extremely well from the start of the second period in a tough building against a very good team.”

Canisius concludes its regular season Saturday night with another game with Air Force.
