BATAVIA – A significant increase of customers has prompted the Town Board to hire additional staff in its water/wastewater maintenance department.
The board, at a special meeting Wednesday night, approved the hiring of Gregory Lang, of Corfu, and Keith Wilkinson, of Batavia, who begin work immediately at a starting wage of $22 per hour. The two are subject to a six-month probationary period, said Supervisor Gregory H. Post.
“We have seen an approximately 400 percent increase in the number of customers in eight years in the water and sewer service sector,” Post said.
“While the town has reduced the number of maintenance staff overall as an efficiency measure, we realize that an additional worker is necessary to provide water and sewer services to residents and commercial enterprises.”
Post said that one of the positions was vacant and that the other, which was in the town’s budget, was created to meet the demand. The town now has three water/wastewater maintenance employees.
In other action, the board approved easements granted by the owners of six properties in the towns of Batavia and Elba to install waterlines as part of its Townline Water District project.
Post said the board will seek easements at regular intervals throughout the project.
