Deli operator sentenced in food stamp scam

A Buffalo deli shop operator was sentenced to 10 months in prison Thursday by Chief U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny.

Nasser Ali Ghanem, 34, was convicted of unauthorized acquisition of food stamp benefits. He was ordered to pay $67,139 in restitution to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo said the defendant operated Hollywood Nights Prime Shop on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo and, from October 2008 through January 2011, used cash to purchase food stamp benefits from food stamp recipients for less than full value.
