Damage estimated at $500,000 after Orchard Park house fire

Damage was estimated at $500,000 and a family dog died when fire destroyed an Orchard Park home Tuesday night, police said.

Someone walking a dog called to report smoke coming from the house at 1 Cherry Tree Lane, which is off Smokes Creek Road, just before 6:30 p.m. The woman of the house returned home several minutes later, police said, as officers found a fire at the rear of the single-family home.

The fire was in a bedroom on the first floor of the two-story home, according to Detective Lt. Patrick McMaster. The couple who lived in the home is staying with relatives.

A preliminary investigation indicates the fire was electrical in nature, although the Erie County Sheriff’s Fire Investigation Unit is assisting with the continuing investigation. “We’ve got some more interviews to do,” McMaster said.

Firefighters from Orchard Park, Hillcrest, Windom, Armor, Newton Abbott, Scranton, Springbrook and West Falls responded to the alarm. The Orchard Park School District provided a school bus for use as a warming station for emergency responders.
