An alleged drug dealer arrested in Ohio has been charged with second-degree murder in a slaying last summer on Buffalo’s West Side, city police announced Tuesday.
Abimael Ayala Gonzalez was taken into custody last fall in the Cleveland area for possession of nearly one pound of cocaine, but later was released on bail. In the meantime, a records search revealed he was wanted here for the slaying of Manuel Mateo, 51, who was fatally shot Aug. 6 on the 300 block of Herkimer Street.
Earlier this week when Gonzalez returned to court in Ohio for further proceedings in the drug case, he was detained and Buffalo Detectives Scott R. Malec and John Garcia served him with an arrest warrant for second-degree murder. It is not known if Gonzalez plans to waive his right to an extradition hearing, which could delay his return to Buffalo.
“This represents the fourth cold case we have solved so far this year and we expect many more homicides to be solved because of the diligence of our detectives,” Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said.
