Big shots and a defensive switch led to a hot fourth quarter, giving Southwestern a win on the opening day of the Section VI boys basketball tournament.
Southwestern went on a 21-9 run in the final quarter to earn a 56-51 win over Oracle Charter in a Class B-2 first round matchup.
Southwestern advances to play No. 5 East in Wednesday’s prequarterfinal round.
Billy Johnston hit a three-pointer with about three minutes left to put the Trojans up, 52-49. The Trojans made free throws down the stretch to close out the win.
“We switched up our defense a little bit,” Southwestern coach Jay Sirianni said of the fourth quarter. “We were playing a little zone and went to a little bit of man. We got some good contested shots and did a nice job of rebounding defensively.”
Ben Burk had 14 points and seven rebounds while Johnston also netted 14 points. Nick Cooper led the team in rebounds with eight.
In other opening round boys games, four players scored in double figures for Alden in a 75-57 win over Springville in Class B-1. Christian Snell led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Jordan Stockweather had 15, Conrad Boucher 13 and Austin Zelasko 10. Boucher also had six assists while Dylon Riddoch had 10 rebounds.
Sam Watkins had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead Newfane to a 64-42 win over Eden. Tyler Jordan added 14 points and Kyle Burdick 13 for the Panthers.
Eight different players scored for Maryvale as the Flyers advanced with a 69-44 win over Lafayette. Mike Kelleher had 17 points, five rebounds and drew three charges for Maryvale. Ray Blackwell had seven points and seven assists while Ted York-Brown pulled in 10 rebounds along with six points.
Senior Morgan Genovese scored nine points in the first quarter to reach the career 1,000-point mark for Fredonia in an 87-26 win over Lackawanna in a Class B-2 prequarterfinal game.
“This was our first playoff win in a couple years,” Fredonia coach Carol Zirkle said. “I’m excited that Morgan got her milestone and we’re looking forward to a playoff run.”
A guard who scores from the three-point line and in transition, Genovese is in her fifth year on varsity.
Fredonia will play CSAT in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
In Class B-1, an impressive performance by Chanyce Powell paced Albion to a 52-38 win over Depew. The sophomore had 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Lindsay Gearhart scored 15 points as Eden defeated Maryvale, 57-48.
