Sister Mary Elaine Malloy, missionary, teacher

March 10, 1925 – Feb. 22, 2015

Sister Mary Elaine Malloy of the Religious Sisters of Mercy, an educator and administrator for 47 years, died Sunday in Mercy Center Health Care Unit. She was 89.

Born Grace Marie Malloy in South Buffalo, she attended Holy Family School, School 29 and South Park High School. She went on to earn a bachelor of arts degree in English from D’Youville College.

On Sept. 8, 1946, Sister Elaine entered the Sisters of Mercy. While teaching in various Catholic elementary schools, Bishop Quigley High School and Mount Mercy Academy, she received a master’s degree in history from Canisius College.

From 1960 to 1982, Sister Elaine ministered in Philippine missions. Returning to the United States in 1983, she continued to teach in Wellsville and then ministered at the Ss. Columba-Brigid Parish Catholic Charities Outreach Program.

She is survived by a brother, Jerry Malloy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Mercy Center Chapel, 625 Abbott Road.
