Canisius’ and Niagara’s women’s basketball teams each celebrated Senior Day on Sunday with home victories in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Led by junior forward Crystal Porter’s 13 points and nine rebounds, the Golden Griffins (9-18, 7-11 MAAC) led virtually all the way in a 62-49 victory over Monmouth (11-16, 7-11) before 935 at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Junior guard Tiahana Mills had 12 points and Kayla Hoohuli, the Griffs’ lone senior, had 10 in the victory that snapped a six-game losing streak. Mills and Hoohuli also combined for 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
At the Gallagher Center in Lewiston, Niagara (13-14, 9-9 MAAC) held visiting Rider (11-17, 8-10) to 11 points in the first half and went on to a 44-33 victory over the Broncs before 274. Rider shot 16.7 percent (4 of 24) in the first half and 12 of 57 (21.2 percent ) overall. Niagara was a little better (36 percent, 9-25) in the first half and 29.2 (14-48) overall. Victoria Rampado had nine points to lead the Niagara scoring.
In her final Niagara home game, senior Meghan McGuinness had 4 points and eight rebounds. McGuinness and departing seniors Kelly Van Leeuwen and Donisha Watson were honored before the game.
Niagara will play at Canisius at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Each will close out the regular season on the road next weekend. Canisius will play at Siena on Friday night and Niagara at Iona on Saturday afternoon.
