VARGA - Josephine (nee Swarcewicz)
December 27, 2014, beloved wife of the late Joseph J. Rafai and George C. Varga; dear mother of Betsey Rafai, Carol (Ron) Carner and Joseph E. Rafai; grandmother of Donald and Steven Carner; sister of the late Helen (Arthur) Zollitsch. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, February 28, 2015, which would have been her 100th birthday, at 11 AM in Assumption Church, 435 Amherst St. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to the Seniors Program at Northwest Buffalo Community Center, 155 Lawn St., Buffalo 14207, where she was a longtime member. Josephine was born in Kenosha, WI and graduated from Hutchinson Central High School in 1932. She and her husband, Joe Rafai, were proprietors of Rafai's Market, later called Varga's Market when she and her second husband, George Varga, operated it. Josephine also worked as a hairdresser and tour group leader. In her early 20s, she was a champion swimmer specializing in the breast stroke, winning medals in junior and women's events at the National Amateur Athletic Union Championship held at the Buffalo Athletic Club. She was a longtime member of the Delaware YMCA, where, at the age of 95, she still swam three times a week. Josephine was a member of the Women's Aquatic Club, an active member of the former St. Elizabeth's Church and an officer in their Mothers' Club, a Girl Scout leader and volunteer at Kenmore Mercy Hospital.
