Falls police probe theft of dog following Facebook posts

NIAGARA FALLS – A male boxer dog belonging to an elderly 98th Street man was apparently stolen late Thursday after several people alerted authorities that the dog was left outside in frigid temperatures, police said.

Officers investigating the complaints found the dog was housed in a plastic dog house insulated by straw. The dog, they said, was healthy and safe, but they asked the owner to take the dog indoors because of the extreme cold, police said.

Later in the evening, the dog’s owner told police the dog was stolen after he let the dog outside from 11 to 11:30 p.m. Footprints in snow showed that someone other than the owner took the dog, police said.

Police said the owner also told them he received several threatening telephone calls after a Facebook posting about the dog being left outside, with some of the callers threatening to steal the dog.

The dog was worth $800, police said.
