Sheriff finds no maltreatment in case of Sheridan dog left out in cold

SHERIDAN – More than 100 calls, emails and complaints were received at the office of Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace Friday when someone posted on a social media site that a dog was left out in the cold on Middle Road in Sheridan.

Gerace said he sent a patrol officer to check out the complaint as soon as he was informed and found the dog to be in good condition in an insulated dog house. He said there was no issue of abuse or any criminal problem with the way the dog was cared for.

Complaints were fielded by the sheriff and his staff for several hours on Friday.

Gerace said one caller wanted the county to pay for a veterinarian to go out and examine the animal.  He said a medical exam was not needed as the dog appeared to be in good condition.

“The real issue here is how social media can get involved,” said the sheriff.  He said he received calls from Nevada, Texas and Michigan as well as from throughout Western New York.
