OLEAN – A 43-year-old hospital worker won $2 million in the Jan. 24 Powerball drawing, New York Lottery officials announced Friday.
Nikki Briggs, of Cuba, was introduced Friday afternoon at the West State Street department store where she bought her ticket from a vending machine on her way out the door.
Her ticket matched the first five numbers drawn, good for a guaranteed second prize of $1 million. But because she had spent an extra dollar on the optional Power Play feature, her winnings were doubled.
Briggs, who works at Olean General Hospital, admitted that she’s a “periodic” Lottery player. “I only play when the jackpot gets big,” she said in a statement.
She will receive her prize in a lump-sum payment, netting more than $1.32 million after taxes.
“I don’t have any real plans for the money,” Briggs said. “It’s nice knowing my financial future is a little more secure.”
