Caroline “Carole” Annette Reid, a retired elementary teacher, died Tuesday in her Depew home under hospice care. She was 79.
Born in Tonawanda, the former Caroline Wilkinson attended Holy Angels Academy and Buffalo State College, earning a bachelor of science degree in art education, as well as a teaching certificate in 1958.
Mrs. Reid taught at Como Park Elementary School in Lancaster from 1958 to 1968.
She also taught religious education at the Blessed Mother Teresa Calcutta Parish/St. James Church in Depew for more than 30 years. She was a member of the parish for more than 50 years, serving as a home school parent organization officer, lunchroom mother and on committees of many fundraisers and events.
Additionally, she taught religious education to special, troubled students who required one-on-one attention and extra help. She received the Faith Formations Educator of the Year Award.
She was an active member of the New Beginnings for Widowed People organization for nearly 20 years, serving as president, taking care of the group’s newsletter for more than 10 years and chairing numerous committees for variety of events and fundraisers.
Mrs. Reid enjoyed the theater and the arts. She volunteered at the Lancaster Opera House for more than 10 years. She also was an avid bridge and pinochle player, a member in five different card clubs. She enjoyed cooking, baking, entertaining and hosting dinner and tea parties in her home.
Her husband of 25 years, Douglas Emerson Reid, died in 1992.
She is survived by two daughters, Jennifer and Molly Prell; a sister, Joyce Knoll; and a granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon Saturday at Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Parish/St. James Church, 496 Terrace Blvd., Depew.
