EPES, Carolyn Livingston

EPES - Carolyn Livingston Age 87, Teacher, Author, Grosvenor Board Member July 23, 1927 to November 2, 2014. A nursery and kindergarten teacher, arts educator and self-published author of Out and About in Buffalo with Children (1979), died Sunday, November 2, 2014 at Beechwood Homes in Getzville, after a brief illness. Born in Detroit, Mrs Epes lived in Bronxville, NY and Chester, CT. She moved to Buffalo in 1954 after her marriage to C. Morgan Epes, Jr., past president and last chairman of Armstrong-Roth-Cady Co., one of Buffalo's oldest firms. Mrs Epes graduated from Northfield Mount Herman School and Wheelock College, student teaching in Boston area schools. In Buffalo, she taught four-year-olds at Westminster Nursery School for 17 years. In the 1980's she also worked part-time for Clayton's Toyland and gave tours of public art installed in Buffalo's newly constructed subway stations. As a volunteer, Mrs. Epes served on the boards of the Children's Hospital Aid Association and the Amherst Nursery School. She taught architectural awareness in the Buffalo public schools for three years. She served the Albright Knox Art Gallery as a docent for ten years, with a special love for introducing children to modern art. At the Albright, she chaired the Junior Group, co-chaired the Western New York Collection, and served both the Member's Gallery and the Member's Council. As a writer, Mrs. Epes also contributed to the Buffalo News "My View" public column. She wrote arts education articles, and hosted a regular group of women writers. She edited two collections of sermons, and a church cookbook. Mrs. Epes claimed to have read every book in her hometown library in Chester. In Buffalo, she served the Grosvenor Board of The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library for six years. Mrs Epes was a long time member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo, where she served the Board of Trustees, The Women's Society, and religious education program, both as a teacher and a board member. With her late husband Morgan, she enjoyed skiing, swimming, tennis and travel- including trips to Egypt, Greece, Italy, England, Antigua, Barbados and Bermuda. She is fondly remembered for an infectious laugh, a love of hosting parties, and for adopting good friends as family members. Carolyn L. Epes is survived by two sons; William Morgan Epes (Aundra) of Charleston, SC; Charles Livingston Epes (Stephanie) of Buffalo; five grandchildren, EmmaGrace Skove-Epes of Bronxville, NY, Calder Lund Epes of San Diego, CA; Hilary Morgan Epes of Buffalo; Robin Livingston Epes of New Paltz, NY and Isobel Livingston Meroe-Epes of Charleston; one step-grandson, Forest Wolf Neikirk of Los Angeles; one sister, Margie Livingston Campbell of Jacksonville, FL, two sisters-in-law, Ann Crittendon Livingston of Burlington, VT and Hattie Hawke Livingston of Hendersonville, NC; beloved nieces and nephews in the Livingston, Campbell, McTaggart and Michel families; three god-daughters, Sara Douglass Campbell, Carol Ann Livingston and Lucy Viele; other beloved family; and special friend, Edward D'Agostino of Williamsville. Mrs. Epes was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, C. Morgan Epes, Jr.; her brother, William Gilbert Livingston, Jr., a sister-in-law, Marjorie Epes Fisher; and a fourth god-daughter, Terry "Little T". Phillips; her brother-in-law, Stafford Campbell, who died shortly after Mrs. Epes, also in November.
