Niagara hockey’s losing streak hits seven

WORCESTER, Mass. – It seems like so long ago that the Niagara University hockey team won a game that one wonders if even the Purple Eagles remember what it feels like to come out on top.

They’re still wondering as they head into the second game of their two-game weekend series against Atlantic Hockey Association host College of the Holy Cross.

On Friday night at Hart Center, Niagara did its best to try to rally for a win but the Crusaders proved to be too much in earning the 6-3 win.

Scott Pooley’s empty-net goal with 1:46 left capped a wild third period in which the teams combined for seven goals.

Unfortunately for the Purple Eagles, they yielded four when they needed to win the period by at least two goals. NU (3-20-2, 3-14-2) lost its seventh in a row as its winless streak reached 13 games.

Lawrence Smith, Kevin Patterson and Derian Plouffe scored for Niagara during the final period to create some anxious moments for Holy Cross (9-12-5, 8-7-5).
