Ever wonder how many vehicles enter the United States annually by way of the four local international bridges?
The total was more than 6.5 million personal vehicles and trucks in fiscal year 2014, according to statistics released by the Buffalo Field Office of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. And those personal vehicles carried more than 11.8 million passengers.
Those figures represent the Port of Buffalo, which comprises the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, and the Rainbow, Whirlpool-Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges in Niagara County.
All told, more than 10.3 million vehicles entered at the 16 ports under the jurisdiction of the Buffalo Field Office, which extends up to Champlain.
Other annual statistics released this week, covering the period from Oct. 1, 2013, to Sept. 30, 2014, apply to the broader area covered by the Buffalo Field Office.
There were 438 narcotic seizures; 421 arrests; 22 currency seizures totaling $267,323; and 438 merchandise seizures totaling $1,473,132. In addition, 33,244 aliens were refused entry and inspections totaled 21,139,263.
