WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Canisius women’s basketball team won for the third time in its last four games, opening a two-game road trip with a 75-58 victory over Monmouth at the MAC.
Kayla Hoohuli scored 19 points in the win as the Golden Griffins improved to 6-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and 8-12 overall. Hoohuli shot 6 for 11 from the floor and also had five rebounds and two steals for Canisius, which returns to action at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rider in Alumni Gymnasium in Lawrenceville.
With the triumph, Griffs coach Terry Zeh is now two MAAC wins shy of 100 for his career.
St. Bonaventure’s (11-7, 4-3) home contest against La Salle (11-9, 3-4) in Atlantic 10 men’s basketball highlights a busy day for the Big 4 teams. It’s the first contest for the men at the Reilly Center since they beat Saint Joseph’s, 70-61. Bona had its three-game winning streak end last Sunday with a 53-48 loss at Rhode Island.
Saturday’s clash between the Bonnies and Explorers features a showdown between two of the better big men in the conference. Bona senior center Youssou Ndoye is shooting 54 percent from the floor, averaging 13.6 points and 10.4 rebounds against A-10 foes. In his last four games, he’s averaging 17.2 ppg. La Salle counterpart Jerrell Wright is averaging just under 12 points and seven rebounds per game.
In other games, the Bona women (11-10, 1-7) look to end a seven-game losing streak at Massachusetts (8-11, 2-5) in the Mullins Center. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. The University at Buffalo women (10-8, 3-4) visit Eastern Michigan (10-8, 3-4) in the Mid-American Conference (2:30 p.m., Radio 1520 AM). In the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Niagara (8-12, 4-7) looks to end a three-game losing streak when it takes the court against Manhattan (2-17, 1-9) at Draddy Gym in Riverdale.
