We should focus on creating great park on Outer Harbor
The 21st Century Park on the Outer Harbor looks forward to the revised plan that the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. will be presenting.
We have been advocating to create a world-class park on the Outer Harbor for three years in order to protect and retain this land for public use. This park would be an incredible quality-of-life amenity for our newly revitalizing downtown, adjacent neighborhoods and Western New York.
We believe that using the 600,000-square-foot Terminals A & B for indoor recreation, as well as for tourism and cultural purposes, would create a remarkable four-season park. We concur with Rep. Brian Higgins, Assemblyman Sean Ryan, Mayor Byron Brown and Councilman Chris Scanlon that a new neighborhood on the Outer Harbor is not justified when there is so much land available in current neighborhoods with existing infrastructure that is sorely in need of revitalization.
Considering that one-third of our city’s population doesn’t own a car, creating access and use of our waterfront becomes an issue of social justice, as well. Our families, young adults and children deserve healthy outdoor and indoor recreational venues. Protecting this land for them is our goal.
