Ice climber on cliff next to Horseshoe Falls

Winter traditionally marks a lull in tourists at Niagara Falls. But visitors viewing the international attraction on Tuesday were treated to an unusual sight — a man climbing up an ice-covered 180-foot tall cliff next to the Horseshoe Falls.

Bob Koshinski, president of media and event company All Services WNY and author of the Niagara Falls Up Close website, said he was on the Ontario side of the Niagara River shooting photos of the falls about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday when he noticed the daring feat being recorded by a video crew on Goat Island’s Terrapin Point.

Koshinski said he was told the man was prominent Canadian ice climber Will Gadd.

"It’s one of those things you don’t expect to see," Koshinski said. "You don’t expect to see anybody that close to the cascade of the water, let alone in the middle of winter. I grew up in the falls. I’ve never seen anything like it."
