Car carrier, 10 vehicles damaged in Fort Erie fire

FORT ERIE, Ont. – A car carrier tractor-trailer rig and four cars destined for a West Seneca dealership were totally destroyed and six other vehicles were damaged when the rig caught fire as it was heading into a truck stop on Pettit Road at about 6:49 a.m. Wednesday.

Fort Erie Fire Chief Larry Coplen said damages were estimated at $500,000 but there were no injuries. He said the truck driver was pulling into the Fort Erie Travel Complex at 1637 Pettit Road for breakfast at the truck stop when he noticed fire coming up from the floor of his cab and got out quickly.

The fire was put out in about 15 minutes. The cause remains under investigation, Coplen said.
