Sabres return from All Star break with new roster challenges

The first day back from the All Star break brought a new set of challenges to the Sabres.

The good news: Captain Brian Gionta is back from an upper body injury. He won't go into detail about what it was but would confirm it was not a head injury. Mike Weber also practiced with the team at HarborCenter Monday afternoon is healthy enough to play.

The bad news: Michal Neuvirth will not make the western road trip with the Sabres after suffering a lower body injury in a workout. Coach Ted Nolan described the length of injury "as not long-long but long enough." Welcome back Matt Hackett who returned from a major knee injury earlier this month.

The goofy news: Oh Nikta Zadorov. The 19-year-old was suspended by the Sabres after he failed to report to the team in time for Monday's practice. He will join the team during the road trip. The duration of his suspension has not been announced.

"When you’re a 19-year old kid, sometimes if you’re not instructed to do things, you know how kids can be sometimes," Nolan said. "This will be a big, big learning curve for him. We’ll deal with it when he gets back."

The Sabres embark on a nine-day road trip, kicking it off against the Flames in Calgary at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
